Some of my best friends are coloreds
December 11th, 2006 by monkeypup in life, opinion, education, cultureAllen Central High School in rural Kentucky is making a stand. A stand for America. A stand for strength, independence and pride. A stand for the confederate flag.
There have been many efforts to get the school to take down the dozens of confederate emblems adorning their school, but the kids and staff won’t budge. In fact, the (all-white) student body doesn’t see what the fuss is.
As one of the cheerleaders says, “To us it’s not about the hatred, I have colored friends around here and they never say anything.”
She makes a valid point. If the coloreds are happy, what’s the problem?
“It’s our tradition,” said another student, “If I was black, it probably would bother me. But if they can understand it wasn’t put toward them in hatred, it wouldn’t be an issue.”
Yet another brilliant point! If he were black, it would bother him, but he’s not, so what’s the big deal?
In any case, the people you want to listen to in situations like this are teenagers. They are certainly as well-informed as anyone could be. Okay, so maybe they don’t know who Guns and Roses was, let alone what the civil war was about. And maybe they don’t quite know anything about Martin Luther King other than their parents refuse to let their schools have the day off on MLK day. But they know the flags are symbols of strength and independence, and nothing else.
Sigh… Sometimes I just want to take a trip through America with a sledgehammer.
Thanks to my loving adorable wife for this one.

In further news, the same high schools class president approved of the hanging of a rainbow flag because she was an avid Care Bears fan when younger. When the football teams quarterback was asked if he liked the flag, he was quoted as saying “I personally liked champ bear better”

one of my favorite parts of the article:
Allen Central adopted its school flag and mascot in 1972, when it was established to consolidate four other schools and their teams: the Maytown WASPS, the Garrett BLACK DEVILS, the Wayland WASPS and the Martin Purple Flash.

I missed the black devils bit. Classic. And these people wonder how they could be construed as racist…

See anything familiar on this state flag?

When your greatest aspiration in life is to own your very own double wide… And your greatest personal achievment to date is the fact that you have kept at least three of your own teeth… Your world view as well as your opinions on race relations can tend to become skewed…
BTW… This quote is classic… Classic I say… “As one of the cheerleaders says, “To us it’s not about the hatred, I have colored friends around here and they never say anything.” Ahhhh “white trash”…
I’m just sayin’…

South Park handled this issue not too long ago. Their town flag was a pretty obvious parody of the rebel flag, with four white men hanging a black man. Chef lobbied to have it changed, but the town was like “It’s part of our history. You can’t change it.”
That show is so fucking funny.
