This article, in which Rolling Stone writer Matt Talibi rips Starfucking Americans a collective asshole, highlights the reasons that we deserve to be cheated by the Bush administration. I completely agree with him. I’d happily give up every single piece of celebrity news if it meant that I’d be more informed on the things that actually matter. Unfortunately, the news in this country is dictated by viewers who would rather hear about the latest escapades of TomKat then see a real piece of news.
I awoke this morning in New York City to find Britney Spears plastered all over the cover of two gigantic daily newspapers, simply because she cut her hair off over the weekend. To me, this crosses a line. My definition of a news story involves something happening. If nothing happens, then you can’t have “news,” because nothing has changed since the day before. Britney Spears was an idiot last Thursday, an idiot on Friday, and an idiot on both Saturday and Sunday. She was, shockingly, also an idiot on Monday. It will be news when she stops being an idiot, and we’ll know when that happens, because she’ll have shot herself for the good of the planet. Britney Spears cutting her hair off is the least-worthy front page news story in the history of humanity.

Amen Brother! If I have to hear about Anna Nicole Smith, her illegitimate ilk, or the fight for her ex-90 year old husband’s loot, I am going on a rampage. Not that your post was about her, but it’s the same caliber story…Who gives a goddamn fuck???? Not me. There is entirely too much happening in the world for people to even give a pause for these “important” people. Fuck Hollywood, famous people, famous people that are famous because they are rich (or their parents are) and fuck the mainstream media for giving them so much attention. Fuck anyone that would rather hear about this shit than what really matters. If I hear One more young NMC college student bitch about politics after hearing their opinion on the whether or not they would have left K-Fed… I am going postal.
I must be a nerd because I was moved more by learning about that corporate charity in the 2008 budget than ANY celebrity news. It’s like this nation’s government is a fuedal system with nobles replaced by mega-corporations. I wish there was such a thing as corporate responsibility in this world. I also wish that it could be accepted that those that provide certain products and/or services (mostly healthcare) should not be motivated by profit.
Quick… what’s the difference between E! News Daily and CNN? Me either.
At least we now know that the president watches the news. Because he seems surprised that other issues (besides Britney and Anna) are out there. He just discovered that the cost of healthcare was an issue.
On a related note, though more sympathetic note, did you happen to check this out either on t.v. or on Youtube, about Craig Ferguson publicly saying he won’t pick on Britney Spears?
All of this type of “reporting” that Talibi talks about is just a means to keep our collective attention on superficial pablum rather than see what’s going on in the world… and seeing how much our own government is responsible for the problems in the world…
